Her story is amazing. In 1976, she escaped from then East Berlin in a piece of luggage with her four year old son. That's right. She escaped cramped into a tiny box with her son, continually whispering to him not to move or to make any sounds at all.

The year 2009 markes the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. "It was only after the wall fell that I really began to understand where my roots were," says the artist.
Not surprisingly, she was doing some activist political work in the past. She is now doing work that is much less political (for her "own health"). I am hoping to get a scan of one of her drawings to post here, but for now, here is an image she took of herself while on the train the other day.
