When my Dad was young, he had heard about a film depicting the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots. Of course, that would have happened hundreds of years before the invention of film. This meant that it was a reenactment. This also means it was one of the very first uses of special effects. He found this hunting around at the Library of Congress site.
